The application event log will show an event ID 12288 containing an error 0x8007000D. But usually starting the service failed because of this message. I also do the following steps with administrator privilege and disabling Firewall and anti virus. The only KMS arrangement I have used is the one run by my employer, so this may not be relevant, but just in case this helps - you usually need to be logged in to the same network as the one where the KM server resides. For me, this meant connecting by VPN to my work network in order to go through KMS validation successfully. If I don't connect by VPN, the KM server refuses to validate the installation.
